  • Maintenance is critical - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Drives great and has great versatility for hauling the whole family around. Gas mileage is decent and has good power. 116K miles so far. Changed front strut towers (squeeking and thumping), front engine bearing seal (oil leak). Still have the original transmission (knock on wood). Im careful about maintenance and it seems to have paid off so far. We just took a five thousand mile, three week road trip to the Grand Canyon and the car performed fabulously. Current problem is the dashboard indications go dead intermittently. Car still runs fine, but no speed indication, tachometer, etc. My mechanic says its the "body module computer" and its likely going to cost $700 to replace it

  • Not the Most Reliable Van - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

We bought the van with 96K and so far had a few major things that needed fixing. The transmission went on it twice while the computer needed replacing and the rain gutters in front of the passenger compartment got clogged and flooded the interior. The passenger side power window still doesnt work. As far as a daily driver its one of the best minivans as far as the interior goes. There are lots of cupholders and storage compartments and theres plenty of room for all. The Mitsubishi 3.0 V6 is smooth and is not bad on gas. It also has adequate acceleration as long as you dont have alot of people or cargo. The transmission is a crummy 3-speed that isnt a good aide for highway mileage.

  • Great Family Vehicle - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

The Dodge Grand Caravan Sport is attractive, very comfortable, functional, and the 3.8 V6 is very powerful. The handling is great for a van. The quality has been good and our dealer has been excellent with any little problems.

  • I love my minivan - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

I thought that I was just buying a van because we were having another baby and needed one. We have 5 kids and cant fit them all in a car or SUV. Little did I know that I would love this van. I cannot imagine driving anything else. There is room for everyone and room for groceries or book bags and anything else we need.

  • What a mistake - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Since moving to N.America I insisted on buying American vehicles. What a mistake. I bought two Chrysler products in 1998 and I am now experiencing problems because of poor engineering (designed to last as long as the warranty). Transmission went 1 day after the 3 year warranty. Chrysler did offer and paid half of the costs of the repair but recommended I purchase extended warranty the next time. Rear door latch not functioning anymore.

Currently have more than 176,000 miles on it, same muffler. Just had to have some big repairs, but not until 1 year ago. Ride could be a little smoother. Looking forward to hitting 200,00 miles on it. Will probably end up being my daughters first car and I will hopefully add another new one this year. I drive this vehicle everywhere, and drive daily, just starting to get a little rust. I truly love this vehicle.

  • Transmission failed two times - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Had number of problems. Transmission failed at 60k and 100k. New Belt failed at 80k. Dealer was not any help. I will not go back to this dealer any more. I will not buy or recommend this van.

Every 20000 needs front brakes, every 30,000 it needs rotors, At 60,000 new transmission, At 75,000 new ac system, belts and pulleys all replaced and starter at 70,000. To top it all off it still is not paid for. Never buy again.

  • Piece of Junk - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

We have 114000 miles in our 98 Dodge Grand Caravan SE. First of all the 3.0 V6 is very slow. When I drive it, I have trouble keeping up with the flow of traffic. Around the 110000 mile mark we started having all these problems. First of all, we noticed that theres a putt-putt sound when you first start accelerating (acceleration hesitates) after you start the van up. The 4 speed auto shifts were taking forever. We were up at 4000 rpms hitting the gas normally before it shifted. Then the brakes started sweaking. We got some of these problems fixed at the dealer but the putt-putt and longer shifting(slightly improved)were still there.

Best day of owning this will be the day its sold. Nothing but heartache. Needed a new engine at 38,000. The tensioner caused the serpentine belt to fall off quarterly. Paid the dealer several times to repair the serp belt, only to have another mechanic tell me there was a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) addressing a faulty tensioner. The A/C leaked causing a musty smell. The brakes have always squeaked, even when new. The removable seats are very heavy. I received a major run around from the dealer when there was I had problems with the TCM (Transaxle Control Module), also part of a TSB. Save your money!
